enemy number one?

oxidation

new or old headlights

oxidation will always attack

There’s an old saying, “give your enemies an inch and they’ll take a mile” and that’s exactly what’s happening here. Firstly, weather is the main cause of headlight oxidation, conditions such as acid rain, snow and the suns UV rays all play a huge part changing the appearance of our headlights. Oxidation is not a form decay or either, a plastic rust, it’s a film that builds on the “outside” of the lens. It bonds to the plastic and forms a hardened shell. This shell is extremely tough and is resistant to removal, oxidation can create all kinds of problems from looks to safety, it’s estimated that at least 90% of all yellow cloudy headlights suffer with oxidation rather than surface damage which we’ll explain in the polish & sanding” section below. So now we know our enemy, let’s quickly defeat it.

did you know all headlights

come with a UV protector?

As we all know, the front of our vehicle receives the most abuse, especially our headlights. Realising this, manufactures strengthened the headlights with a special UV (ultraviolet) coating sprayed on and heat cured at the factory. This essential component called a UV headlight lens protector is used to guard against ultraviolet sun rays, and environmental factors such as, road debris and harsh weather conditions, moreover the UV lens protector slows down the build-up of headlight oxidation. Now try to imagine if they never came with a UV protector, how quickly would they go yellow or cloudy with no blocking agent? This is why it’s critical to keep the UV lens protector intact. When you think about it, the last thing we should be doing is manually removing it. to discover more on this subject, visit our information page.

understanding before

polish and sanding

As we explained in the “Oxidation section” oxidation will always find a way to attack our headlights and unfortunately it never stops, this is why the factory UV lens protector is so important, think about it what would happen if we removed it? How quickly then would oxidation set in. Statistics show 90% of all cloudy headlights suffer from oxidation rather than “surface damage” such as pitting, peeling, or cracking. this means 9 out of 10 cloudy headlights need deoxidizing rather than repairing or restoring, unfortunately oxidation often gets mistaken for surface damage, which can lead to the use of abrasives such as polishes, pastes, and sandpaper, the key here is to have a true understanding of our headlights condition before we perform a repair. To help you with this we have created a page called “what’s the true condition of my headlights” this important page shows pictures of different type of problems that headlights encounter, these pictures will help you identify the problem so you can choose the correct method in which to fix them.

improving visibilty

equals less stress

Having the ability to see while driving at night is down to one thing, our headlights. Because headlights are a huge factor when it comes to safety, keeping them clear is a major priority. So how do we keep them clear? Overtime, oxidation builds on the “outside” of our headlight lenses, this gives us less visibility overtime, so the key is to prevent oxidation from building. In the past, we were only offered lengthy abrasive cleaning methods, for example, polish, pastes, waxes and sandpaper. Today, thankfully, there is an alternative, it’s called a liquid deoxidiser. Deoxidisers that are specifically designed to remove headlight oxidation will clear the headlight lens giving us the benefit of better visibility while driving at night. Furthermore, it’s completely safe to use on all factory UV lens protectors. Our aim here is making people aware of the dangers of cloudy oxidised headlights but, to also help millions of people quickly combat this worldwide problem with the right solutions.

importance of maintaining

new and old headlights

When it comes to cleaning and maintaining our car, we pull out the polish, wax, and wheel cleaner but what about the headlight cleaner, what are we using to clean and maintain our headlights? In the past our instincts were to reach for the toothpaste, polish and waxes etc, unfortunately however these can have adverse effects as they contain abrasive particles that vary in size, you can only imagine what these abrasives do to the factory UV coating and how quickly it takes to remove it. Harsh chemicals play a huge part too, for example products with deet, acetone, and oil lubricants, these can cause the plastic to expand creating tiny microfractures in the lens. Headlights should be carefully treated as the manufactures suggest, especially the UV coating as it’s on the outside of the lens. today this can be easily achieved using a non-abrasive liquid deoxidizer. Never before has there been a safer or quicker way to clean and maintain new or old headlights. Just a quick wipe every 3 months will always allow you to keep your headlights in tip-top condition.
