We, at Deoxinator, looked into all the causes of yellowing cloudy headlights plus, the many different methods of cleaning headlights. Our findings were, let’s just say, unsettling. What is

Conditions such as, rain, snow, UV sun rays and various road conditions form oxidation over time. Headlight oxidation is not a form of plastic decay or either, a plastic rust, it’s a substance that attaches itself to the “outside” of the headlight lens. It bonds to the plastic and forms a hardened shell that will attract more oxidation causing the lens to be less transparent (opaque) over time. This shell is extremely tough and is resistant to removal, but beneath the oxidation shell the headlight lens still remains intact with no damage. Oxidation does NOT discriminate and will attack “all” polycarbonate (plastic) headlights. It’s estimated that at least 90% of all vehicles suffer from oxidation rather than surface damage which we’ll explain in the “understanding before polish and sanding” section below. This essential component is called a UV headlight lens protector which is used to guard against ultraviolet sun rays, environmental factors such as, road debris and all types of weather conditions. Furthermore, the UV lens protector slows down oxidation build up. Now, with this in mind, try to imagine what would happen if our headlights never had a UV lens protector? How quick would our headlights get damaged and go cloudy with no blocking agent? This is why it’s critical to keep the UV lens protector intact. When you think about it, the last thing we should be doing is removing this manually.

So, with this mind, what would happen if we removed it? How quickly would oxidation set in? So we can’t emphasise enough, how critical it is to keep our factory UV lens protector intact, which brings us to this, at least 90% of all cloudy headlights suffer from oxidation, rather than “surface damage” such as pitting, peeling, or even cracking. This means 9 out of 10 cloudy, yellowing headlights just need cleaning rather than restoring. This is done best with a powerful liquid deoxidizer, as liquid is non-abrasive and therefore non-destructive. Unfortunately however, many of us are attacking oxidation with abrasives such as polishes, pastes, waxes and most aggressive of all, sandpaper, all of these will breakdown or even remove the UV lens protector. Needless to say, this is not a good direction.
